Self motivation tips come with the territory.
Fundamentally, all motivation is self motivation

Included here are key self motivation tips, references to motivation theories and how to define motivation. In addition, we'll relate this to motivation in the workplace and some employee motivation theory, in particular, intrinsic and extrinsic motivation.

In terms of self motivation tips, the first one is.......
........accept that it is impossible to be totally un-motivated (unless you are dead).

The above may be seen by some as a provocative statement, but please park-up your reactions (especially if they were emotional) and stay open minded - you don't have to believe or agree with a word I say, of course, read on and then make up your own mind.

Let's start with a question: how would you define motivation?:

Simply put, it means - the reason or reasons one has for acting or behaving in a particular way; the general desire or willingness of someone to do something.

This page is called, self motivation tips - why?

Well, we need to be clear about where the power is from a motivational psychology perspective.

Many people ask, "how do you motivate someone?".

The answer is, YOU DON'T, she or he does.

The only person that can motivate you is YOU - hence, SELF motivation.

Others can help, of course, and there are situations where the help of a coach or mentor will be invaluable in arousing your curiosity and interest.

Or, sometimes, increasing your willingness or desire may need an incentive of some sort (e.g. money or affection or a prize).

And you or others can certainly de-motivate you with negative attitudes or put-downs or criticisms or.....in a hundred different ways.

But, ultimately, only YOU can choose for yourself the reason or reasons you have for acting or behaving in a particular way and your general desire or willingness to do something or not.

You may be motivated (or demotivated) about anything.

If you choose to stay in bed and avoid work or steal from others or lie or cheat etc., you may be judged negatively by your peers (or even locked up away from them).

However, you were motivated to do these things.

It's surprising sometimes how hard people will work to avoid working - anyway, you get the idea?

Two key motivational theories:

1. the Maslow theory of motivation. Abraham MASLOW (1908-1990) put forward a theory suggesting that it is a hierarchy of internal needs that cause people to choose to behave in certain ways.

2. the Herzberg motivation theory. Frederick HERZBERG (1923-2000) suggested a motivation-hygiene theory - an employee motivation theory that relates to motivation in the workplace.

Three important self motivation tips based on the motivation theories of Maslow and Herzberg:

* 1. recognise that your ARE motivated.

YOU have the power to choose the reason or reasons for acting or behaving in a particular way and for your general desire or willingness to do something or not.

The key to self improvement success is to choose to achieve your goals, learn in the process, make necessary changes and achieve success.

* 2. your motivation comes from your INTERNAL NEEDS.

These needs are not static and will change as your life circumstances change.

The key is to develop your self awareness so that your choices to move towards things that will satisfy you, or away from things that will dissatisfy you, are consciously taken after evaluating their effects on your self improvement goals and self help motivation.

* 3. pay attention to the motivators and the hygiene factors.

In practice, keep these self motivation tips simple. To paraphrase
Herzberg:

~ seek the motivators in everything you do - that is:

* become an achiever

* seek recognition for your achievements (i.e. from others and from yourself)

* make what you do interesting (e.g. use your whole brain to think differently. Having fun is a good way to do this - try it)

* take responsibility and use your power and initiative; learn from
every one and everything

~ pay attention to ensuring that the hygiene factors are positive (don't
get over elaborate with these self motivation tips, keep it simple and
just do it):

For example:

* be persuasive in your dealings with others

* use your communication skills effectively, especially the golden triangle of communications

* SOLVE problems, rather than fix them

* make decisions and avoid procrastination.
